As the cost and the term of the translation are based on the volume of the document, it is important to obtain the most accurate estimate. But at the moment there is no established system or rules prescribing which tools should be used to count words, so you need to at least imagine how this is done to understand why you should not expect that from two different bureaus you will get the same counting words.
As when counting words using the Statistics function in MS Word or using such a program to count words like PractiCount and Invoice, or when using such translation programs as Trados or Wordfast, it is difficult to get the same counting results, because all these tools apply different ways of counting. And even if translation agencies use different systems to count words in a document, the word count obtained using the Trados program does not match the count obtained from MS Word statistics.
